There are obstacles, of course. The capital’s single-runway airport is a bottleneck restricting the number of flights in and out of Port-au-Prince. Once aid is delivered, roadways and bridges are so badly damaged—and vehicles with enough fuel are so scarce—that food, water and medical supplies cannot easily reach the places where they are most needed.

Damage to the capital’s seaport facilities is making it difficult if not impossible to bring many supplies to Haiti by sea. To help with the situation, the United States Navy has stationed an aircraft carrier, the USS Carl Vinson, off the Haitian coast, where it is taking aboard relief supplies from cargo ships and then redistributing them to inland destinations by helicopter. Without the U.S. military, which is bearing great expense in managing the logistics of the immense task of earthquake relief, far less aid would be reaching suffering Haitians.

Even in its own time of economic difficulty, the U.S. today still has the resources—and the willingness—to reach out and help another nation. This has been the historic pattern of the U.S., which after World War II spent billions of dollars reviving the economies of defeated Germany and Japan. 

But what will happen if the U.S. someday lacks the resources to help?  Will any other nation give of its time and treasure to the degree the U.S. has done? Although many governments around the world are helping magnanimously with Haiti earthquake relief, the U.S. role is unmatched.

There are enough difficulties providing adequate aid to just one large city in time of crisis. What would happen if all the cities of the world were stricken with disaster simultaneously? Your Bible warns that this is exactly what will happen at the end of this age! “Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, ‘It is done!’ And there were noises and thunderings and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such a mighty and great earthquake as had not occurred since men were on the earth. Now the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell” (Revelation 16:17-19).

With the world faced by the prospect of massive global destruction and the imminent end of all human civilization, only Jesus Christ—aided by His saints, the then-immortal firstfruits who were His faithful followers in our present age—will be able to save humanity from total annihilation.  “For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect's sake those days will be shortened” (Matthew 24:22).
