A Sad Day for Britain!

Comment on this article

March 29, 2014 marked a watershed in Britain as same-sex marriages were performed for the first time. The eager and happy same-sex couples were in no doubt about the significance of the day; as one put it, “We are changing one of the absolute, most fundamental building blocks of our society—marriage. And that’s quite daunting actually.” But are these shocking changes really a good thing for Britain—or any other nation that adopts them? How does God view homosexual relationships—and the political leaders that support them?

Prime Minister David Cameron proclaimed it to be an “historic day” for Britain, while other political leaders spoke of it as a “proud” and “happy” day that would make Britain a different nation “recognizing equal marriage in law.”

Same-sex “civil partnerships” had been introduced in 2004, but the legislation to allow actual “marriages” in England and Wales did not come into law until July 2013, with Scotland enacting its own law as recently as February 2014.

This far-reaching change in the social life of Britain is part of a worldwide trend redefining traditional views of marriage that have dominated society for thousands of years.

The Christian idea of marriage being exclusively a union of man and woman has been undermined, derided, cast aside and now rejected as being out of touch with “modern” ways of thinking. Modernists are delighted and can see nothing wrong with legalizing same-sex marriage. They see it as a healthy outcome of treating people as equals: if men can marry women, why shouldn’t women marry women, and men marry men?

In Genesis 2:26 God said, “Let a man leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife and become one flesh.” We call this relationship “marriage.” So by this definition, marriage is a natural institution ordained by God. It is decidedly man with woman, and not a same-sex relationship. The proponents of same-sex marriages have unashamedly hijacked the biblical definition of “marriage” and reinterpreted it to suit their own unnatural purposes.

This should not surprise us. The mass rejection of God in our society has led to the “anything goes” mentality that accepts same-sex relationships as simply an alternative, acceptable lifestyle. But the Bible makes it very clear that those who pursue such relationships are in defiance of God and will not be a part of the coming Kingdom of God—unless they repent of their sin (Ephesians 5:3, 5; 1 Corinthians 6:9–10).

When we understand God’s strongest denunciation of this lifestyle, we ought to shudder at the potential consequences. God wants mankind to “live by every word of God” (Matthew 4:4). And God makes His will plain: “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination” (Leviticus 18:22).

And what does this sin eventually lead to? When it is practiced, “the land is defiled; therefore I [God] visit the punishment of its iniquity upon it, and the land vomits out its inhabitants. You shall therefore keep My statutes and My judgments, and shall not commit any of these abominations, either any of your own nation or any stranger who dwells among you” (Leviticus 18:24–26).

So, although many in Britain are rejoicing at their newfound freedom to marry whomever they will, these developments bode ill for the future. God is faithful to His word and does NOT take such sins lightly. Once a nation goes down this route, its fate is sealed and the time will come when God will act.

The greatest upheaval in the history of mankind is just around the corner if we persist in this downward spiral into sin. From God’s perspective March 29, 2014 was decidedly a sad day for Britain!
