One of the latest catch phrases, "Is there an app for that?" came from commercials about the new generation of cell phones. Applications are available that can give you information on virtually any subject and often make available the means to accomplish many things. How about an app for the meaning and purpose of life? Is there an app for that?

Life is awfully fast-paced. Those who are rushing to make a quick buck can generate applications (apps) for the latest cell phones as quickly as those rushing to buy the latest technology can plunk down their money to get them. It's truly amazing!

Most of us have seen many fadish widgets and gizmos come and go. Many of them end up in a drawer or clutter up the closet or garage, when the novelty has worn off. Or, a newer and enhanced one appears on the market, making the old one obsolete. Computer software is also like that, as Software 1.0 is replaced with the newer Software 2.0. This usually happens as soon as you purchase Software 1.0.

I'm neither a technophobe nor a technophile. For example, I have a cell phone, but I find I don't need most of the bells and whistles that are available. I do very little texting and I've never tweeted. I probably shouldn't admit that, as that puts me in a class with curmudgeons and grumpy old men. I'm still getting used to the latest operating system on my computer. I liked the old one just fine. It did everything I needed it to do. But we are all being dragged along with the pace of change whether we like it or not.

Life, even without all of the widgets and gizmos, is very fast-paced. It's here today and gone tomorrow. The Bible compares life's length to a blade of grass (Psalm 103:15; 1 Peter 1:24).

When it comes to living life, however, we do need "an app for that." Is there an app for slowing down the rat race so we have time to think about what life is all about? Is there an app to help us consider the future before we, like last year's gizmo, end up in "the box stored in the garage"?

There are apps for all kinds of games for our amusement, but is there an app for explaining what this game of life is all about? Is there more to life than just talking, texting and tweeting on a cell phone? Is there more to life than just listening to music, watching movies, playing games, shopping online, or tracking mutual funds and gas mileage?

There is an app for finding the closest gas station, restaurant, pizza parlor or shushi bar, but is there an app for helping us find the way to eternal life? There is an app for telling us the price of stocks, or to help us make money and lay up "treasure on earth," but is there an app for telling us how to "lay up treasure in heaven" (Matthew 6:20)? There is an app for converting money from one currency to another, but is there an app for converting the heart?

Sooner or later we all reach the point where those big and important questions grab our attention. We ask ourselves, "Is this all there is? Is there more to life than this? What does God require of me?"

There is an app for that! It's the Bible. It's been around for quite a long time and has never needed updating, except to publish it in up-to-date language! It requires no batteries, license agreement or periodic upgrades. And it answers these really important questions of life.
