Civil right or morally wrong?

Some events are obvious turning points in the course of history. Other events may go unnoticed by many, but are, nonetheless, turning points in determining how things will turn out. As an example, the headlines shout, "Don't ask, don't tell repealed," which means that the hotly debated policy of allowing homosexual individuals to serve in the military – as long as their sexual preference was kept private and not openly practiced or publicized to others – has been changed.

Now it seems that homosexuals can openly pursue their deviate behavior within the military services which are sworn to protect our nation against enemies, foreign and domestic.

This is a change, of course, for our nation that will have bitter consequences. Consider, if you will, serving in close quarters in barracks, aboard ship, in combat zones and other situations peculiar to military service. Conflict, friction and hostility between heterosexual individuals and homosexuals – male and female – are inevitable.

Even though organized homosexual groups have been pressing their agenda forward, alleging that so-called "sexual orientation" is a "civil right," there has been resistance and pushback at all levels of society. Same-sex marriage and civil unions have been made legal in some states, but the majority of states have rejected or simply refused to consider such relationships as legal, with the rights, privileges and responsibilities that go with marriage. But the pressure is relentless, as those who practice and promote this perverted lifestyle pursue their goals though political means, economic pressure and popular entertainment which portrays the "gay" way of life as a normal, even preferable way to live.

These efforts on the part of homosexuals ignore the plain facts supported by mountains of evidence. It is not a healthy lifestyle. The threat of HIV and AIDS is very real and the number of cases continues to rise at an alarming rate, particularly among homosexuals. Is it any wonder that this is happening, since the horrific consequences of this activity are being ignored by the popular media and politicians? While there are some treatments for the symptoms, there is no cure for HIV and AIDS, and it is ultimately a fatal disease.

Beyond the physical consequences of this aberrant behavior, there is the emotional scarring, and spiritual devastation that results from ignoring the plain words of Scripture. This is not a new problem. Anciently, God plainly condemned this kind of behavior by His words and actions. If you don't know the story, you should read about the fate of the ancient cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, known for their profligate immorality, particularly homosexuality. The biblical account is found in Genesis 18:20; 19:24.

The Apostle Paul dealt with it in his day. He boldly condemned homosexuality in plain language. For example, he was inspired to write: "Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due" (Romans 1:24-29).

While most people in our nation are worried about the economy and prestige of our country, there is a more basic, pressing question. Can a nation long stand that legalizes sodomy? Is it a civil right, as some assert, or is it clearly morally wrong, and repugnant in the eyes of our Creator? God sent two angelic beings down to walk the streets of Sodom and Gomorrah. When they had seen enough, God had those cities destroyed in dramatic fashion. When God has enough of the moral degradation of our modern society in the USA and other nations of the world, He will bring this current age to an end. Can it be long?
