Thank God and Haiti – if you feel blessed to be an American!

Recently I watched a program on PBS about Voodoo and Zombies in Haiti. Many people have heard of Haiti. Unfortunately, most have never heard of the pivotal role Haiti played in America's rise to greatness.

In the Bible are prophecies going back over 3,500 years of a people who at one time occupied a territory in the Middle East; who would suffer deportation from their homeland, after which they would endure an astounding 2,520 years of insignificance, to be followed by suddenly producing the greatest nation which would ever exist! That deportation occurred in successive waves, starting in 745bc and culminating in the fall of their capital, Samaria, in 721bc.

It can now be proven that their descendants migrated out of the Middle East into Northwestern Europe and the British Isles. One of their leading groups, the tribe of Manasseh, finally became the core people of America. Exactly 2,520 years after their first wave of captivity, the Declaration of Independence was signed—in 1776ad. And 2,520 years after the fall of their ancient capital, Washington, DC became the new capital of the fledgling United States – in 1800 ad. The meteoric rise of America to become the greatest, most powerful, wealthiest, most blessed-of-God nation which would ever exist, had begun! How did God do it?

One major blessing occurred in 1803: "Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte had a vision of a renewed western empire for France, and…the recapture of Louisiana from Spain. Control over this vast territory would halt the westward expansion of the young United States and would supply French colonies in the West Indies with the goods they needed. In 1800, Napoleon signed ... an agreement that stipulated that France would provide Spain with a kingdom [in Italy] for the son-in-law of Spain's king if Spain would return Louisiana to France" (Web site; Louisiana State Museum).

At that time, France's most lucrative colonial possession, Saint-Domingue, known today as Haiti, was in the grip of a slave revolt. Napoleon sent his own brother-in-law, General de Brigade Charles Victor Emmanuel Leclerc, with thousands of Europe's best troops, to put down the revolt, reinstitute slavery, and to continue on to the newly acquired Louisiana; to protect it from any attempt by Spain to retake the territory, or from any incursion by the Americans. But the unthinkable happened—the slaves won!

By the end of the war in Haiti, France had lost over 40,000 troops – and Napoleon's brother-in-law was dead: "the twelve-year revolt … succeeded, forcing French troops to return defeated to France and preventing them from reaching their ultimate destination – Louisiana – and from being able to defend it. As Napoleon's New World empire disintegrated, the loss of Haiti made Louisiana unnecessary" (Web site; Louisiana State Museum).

President Jefferson offered to buy a small portion of the territory. "Initially Jefferson, through his minister to France, Robert Livingston, offered Napoleon $2 million for a small tract of land on the lower Mississippi. There Americans could build their own seaport. Impatient at the lack of news, Jefferson sent James Monroe to Paris to offer $10 million for New Orleans and West Florida. Almost at the same time, and unbeknownst to Jefferson, France had offered all of Louisiana to Livingston for $15 million" (Web site; Archiving Early America). For less than 3 cents an acre the United States acquired more than 500 million acres of the richest, most productive land on earth, nearly doubling the size of the nation, and removing the continuing threat of a future war with France! Not a bad deal – thanks to Almighty God and the freed slaves of Haiti.

We Americans, called to set an example of righteousness for the whole world, have failed miserably. Unless we make an about-face and turn to God soon, our utter destruction as a nation is prophesied to happen again, as it did over 2,520 years ago. Is it too late to avoid our Armageddon?
