A Prophetic Timeline for Jerusalem & the Middle East

Whiteboard: A Prophetic Timeline for Jerusalem & the Middle East

Are we in the end-times? Let’s put what’s happening in the Middle East in context, as this timeline shows 9 end-time prophecies from the book of Daniel, book of Revelation, and Matthew 24. We’ll show how 1,260 years = a time times and half a time = 42 months = 3.5 years in Bible prophecy.

[The text below represents an edited transcript of this Tomorrow’s World whiteboard.]

9 End-Time Prophecies for Jerusalem (1,290 Days Explained)

We made a timeline showing future events that will happen in the Middle East leading up to the Tribulation. To build this timeline we used prophecies from the Bible specifically about this region of the world.

So this timeline shows when the Abomination of Desolation is set up, when Jerusalem will be surrounded by armies, the time when the Saints should flee to safety from the tribulation, when the “King of the North” will defeat the “King of the South,” and much more that you can prove for yourself from the Bible.

We’ll show you how we did it.

Now, the Bible doesn't provide precise dates for every prophecy. So we began with prophecies that mention the number of days, months, or years, then filled in gaps with prophecies that don’t mention specific timeframes.

Abomination of Desolation | Daniel 12: 11; Matthew 24:15

  1. We started with the abomination of desolation mentioned in the book of Daniel and the gospel of Matthew.

Daniel says, “From the time that the daily sacrifice is taken away, and the abomination of desolation is set up, there shall be 1,290 days” (Daniel 12: 11; Matthew 24:15).

That is 1,290 days to the resurrection of the Saints and the return of Jesus Christ, as we see from the context of the chapter, especially verse 13.

So we’ll place the stopping of the animal sacrifices and the setting up of the abomination of desolation here, 1,290 days before Jesus returns.

And we’ll get back to the animal sacrifices later in the video.

But in Matthew, Jesus explained:

“When you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (whoever reads, let him understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains” (Matthhew 24:15–16).

So we see here, when the Abomination of Desolation is set up, it is time for those who understand Scripture to flee to safety under God’s protection, which we’ll discuss more in just a bit.

Times of the Gentiles | Revelation 11:2; Luke 21:24

  1. The second reference point on our timeline is the Gentiles “tread[ing] the Holy City underfoot for forty-two months” (Revelation 11:2).

In other words, Jerusalem will be controlled by non-Jews for 42 months, or 3.5 years, prior to Jesus’ return.

Using 30 days for each prophetic month patterned after the average month on a Hebrew calendar, the 42 months equals 1,260 days.

Meaning the Gentiles will trample the city beginning 30 days after the abomination of desolation is set up.

The Two Witnesses and the Great Tribulation (1,260 Days Explained)

  1. The third reference point is that God “will give power to [His] two witnesses, and they will prophesy 1,260 days” (Revelation 11:3).

So that goes here.

  1. And the fourth and final time specific event is that the saints (or followers) of God will be protected from the Tribulation and Day of the Lord for “a time and times and half a time [or 3.5 years]” prior to Jesus’ return (Revelation 12:14).

End-Time Animal Sacrifices Will Begin in Jerusalem

Now, let’s fill in some gaps with additional details and clues the Bible provides, so we can know what to watch for.

First, if the daily animal sacrifices are stopped 1,290 days before Jesus returns, and since the sacrifices are not happening at the time this video was created, this means they must be started again at some point.

We don’t know exactly when they will start, and we don’t know exactly how long they will continue before they are stopped, but we do know they need to start again.

The Jews beginning animal sacrifices again in Jerusalem will be a major event because it has not happened since 70 AD when the Romans destroyed the temple.

Regardless of the details of how or when, keeping an eye out for the Jews to begin sacrifices again is definitely a key to watch out for.

Jerusalem Surrounded by Armies | Luke 21:20-24

The next gap we’ll fill in is from Jesus’ description of events in Luke 21:20–24.

“When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those who are in the midst of her depart, and let not those who are in the country enter her. For these are the days of vengeance… For there will be great distress in the land… And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led away captive into all nations. And [listen to this part] Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.”

There are a couple points to be made here:

  • One is the fact that when Jerusalem is surrounded by armies Jesus gives the same warning to “flee to the mountains,” as He gave when He spoke about the abomination of desolation.
  • And the second is that these armies will surround Jerusalem 30 days before it is “trampled by Gentiles” for the 42 months, or 3.5 years.

So, we’ll place “armies surrounding Jerusalem” here, just before (or about the same time as) the abomination of desolation.

The Antichrist (aka False Prophet, the Man of Sin, the Lawless One)

Next, we’ll place the “Man of Sin” described in Revelation 13 and 2 Thessalonians.

Revelation says:

He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men (Revelation 13:13).

And 2 Thessalonians says:

The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders (2 Thessalonians 2:9).

It says this man will exalt “himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God” (2 Thessalonians 2:4).

Whether or not this is the entire fulfillment of the final abomination of desolation, we’ll have to see, but this certainly will be an abominable act performed in the years just before Jesus returns.

So we’ll place it here, along with the abomination of desolation.

The King of the South vs the King of the North | Daniel 11

Another event to look out for revolves around what the Book of Daniel calls the “King of the North,” and the “King of the South.”

In Daniel 11:40-42, we see the King of the South will be made of the countries of North Africa, including Libya and Ethiopia, and likely led by Egypt. This alliance will attack the King of the North (that is, the coming European Beast power made up of ten rulers from Europe), as mentioned in Daniel 11.

However, the King of the North will “come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter the countries, overwhelm them, and pass through.”

Continuing, it explains:

He shall also enter the Glorious Land (that is Jerusalem, and the land of Israel), and many countries shall be overthrown; but these shall escape from his hand: Edom, Moab, and the prominent people of Ammon [or Jordan] (Daniel 11:40–41).

One of the likely reasons these peoples will not be overrun by the King of the North is because of the alliance described in Psalm 83, which includes Edom, Ammon, and Moab as well as other peoples in the region being allied with Assyria (or modern-day Germany—you can read more about that here).

While we cannot make absolute connections between the peoples mentioned in Psalm 83 and Daniel 11 to the nations we see today, based on several factors, the peoples of this alliance likely make up the modern peoples of Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, and the Palestinians.

So we’ll place the King of the South attacking the Beast power (or King of the North) here. Again, not with a time attached to it, but just showing where it will happen relative to the time-specific events.

The Beast of Revelation (aka the King of the North)

We’ll place the Beast power going down to defeat the King of the South, then entering the “glorious land” here, leading to Jerusalem surrounded by the armies of the Gentiles, who will then control Jerusalem for 42 months—again 3.5 years.

And since these two major powers will likely be established before they go to war with one another, we will place them here in our sequence of events to watch for.

Timeline of These End-Time Prophecies

So here are these events in order:

  • The establishment of the King of the North (aka the Beast of Revelation)
  • The establishment of the King of the South (or alliance made up of nations from North Africa, with Egypt as its likely head)
  • The Jews beginning animal sacrifices again in Jerusalem after almost 2,000 years
  • The King of the South attacking or provoking the King of the North
  • The King of the North defeats the King of the South
  • The King of the North and its allies enter Israel and surround Jerusalem with armies
  • The sacrifices are stopped and the abomination of desolation is set up, along with the man of sin attempting to take the place of God Almighty.

Again, the abomination of desolation will mark 1,290 days until Jesus returns.

And when we see these things, Jesus said it is time for the saints to flee and go to a place He will provide in the wilderness to be protected and nourished by God for 3.5 years of the Tribulation and Day of the Lord (Revelation 12:14).

This means there is a 30-day window to flee before the Gentiles will overrun and “trample” Jerusalem and the Tribulation begins with 1,260 days, or 3.5 years, remaining until Jesus returns.

This is not all there is, but these are some of the major events to keep an eye out for in the Middle East that will happen leading up to the Tribulation.
