God strikes the British for their sins?

Comment on this article

Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries the British were recognized as being basically moral and God-fearing. British civil servants were known to be fair minded, good and decent people in such far flung areas as India, East Africa, the Caribbean and other colonial outposts.

Their largest church organization, the Church of England, was even headed by their monarch. What a strange idea that seems; that the leader of the then greatest empire in the world was revered as head of the country's chief religious body.

However, after the world wars, change crept in. A promiscuous, anything-goes lifestyle began to take over these once moral people. Disbelief in God replaced the sure core beliefs of many of the Queen's subjects, and even members of the royal family began to more and more turn their backs on Bible teachings. All across Britain, churches stand almost empty.

Now a few voices are being raised – even within the very church the queen heads – calling for repentance and correctly pointing out that judgments of God are beginning to come down on the British people because of their sins.

A recent article in the London Telegraph said in part:

The floods that have devastated swathes of the country are God's judgment on the immorality and greed of modern society, according to senior Church of England bishops.

One diocesan bishop has even claimed that laws that have undermined marriage, including the introduction of pro-gay legislation, have provoked God to act by sending the storms that have left thousands of people homeless.

The Rt. Rev. Graham Dow, Bishop of Carlisle, argued that the floods are … also a judgment on society's moral decadence.

"This is a strong and definite judgment because the world has been arrogant in going its own way," he said. "We are reaping the consequences of our moral degradation, as well as the environmental damage that we have caused."

"We are in serious moral trouble because every type of lifestyle is now regarded as legitimate," he said.

He urged people to respond to the latest floods by turning away from a lifestyle of greed to instead live thinking of the consequences of their actions (London Telegraph, July 1, 2007).

The Bishop has it only partly right. The fundamental problem is that many other teachings of this world's churches do not come from the Bible – while at the same time they ignore many actual biblical teachings. For example, the church of the God of the Bible has always taught obedience to all of the Ten Commandments, as well as biblical statutes and judgments as they apply to us today. The Bishop's church has never taught this! If all of God's laws had been followed by the British, instead of just a select few moral principles culled from the Bible, the state of the Empire would be radically different now.

As the British and Americans drift ever further from the God of the Bible, we can expect even more punishments – natural disasters such as fires, floods, storms, earthquakes, terrorist attacks, food shortages and other calamities – until we finally learn to fear to disobey God (Matthew 24; Deuteronomy 28; Leviticus 26).

I compliment the Bishop for having the courage to speak out, but if he is really sincere he should find out where God's true church is and come and become a part of this end-time work, and begin to practice the rest of God's precepts found in the Bible, not just the few his religious training has taught him. There is far more to God's way of life than just avoiding greed and wrong marriages. If obeyed, God's laws bring peace, happiness and blessings; if disobeyed, curses.
