A powerful military establishment, a booming economy, food in abundance, healthy citizens, prosperity abounding – all that any nation could want or hope for.
But then a prophet of God sends a message to the leader of this blessed land which said in effect, "Because of your arrogance and pride and your failure to give credit to God, your mighty nation shall loose its blessings. You are cursed. Your nation shall be brought down, to become the lowest nation on earth, and foreigners shall rule over you – from now on!"
The United States you say? No – not yet. This was about Egypt 2600 years ago!
"Egypt will become a desolate wasteland. Then they will know that I am the Lord. Because he said, 'The Nile is mine; I made it,' therefore … I will make the land of Egypt desolate among devastated lands, and her cities will lie desolate forty years…And I will disperse the Egyptians among the nations and scatter them through the countries. At the end of forty years I will gather the Egyptians from the nations where they were scattered … to … the land of their ancestry. There they will be a lowly kingdom. It will be the lowliest of kingdoms and will never again exalt itself above the other nations" (Ezekiel 29:9-15 NIV).
Her idols were destroyed, just as the Bible said. With the coming of professing Christianity to Egypt, most idols were outlawed. Only a few were retained – but renamed with Christian names such as Mary or Jesus. Then, with the Moslem conquest, even these holdovers from idolatry were banned from much of Egypt.
All that Ezekiel prophesied against Egypt happened! First the Babylonians conquered Egypt and exiled them 40 years, then came Persian rule. The Greeks came next and set up a line of foreign pharaohs that ruled Egypt until 152 B.C. After that, Rome ruled, followed by Arab invaders, the Turks, the French, and the British. King Farouk, of Albanian ancestry, was replaced by a republic in 1953. Since that time, the rulers of Egypt have been of Arab and Ethiopian blood. There have been no ethnic Egyptian princes or rulers in Egypt in the last 2600 years – since the time of Ezekiel's prophecy – and Egypt has never regained her prestige and power in the world!
Now comes a shock. Ezekiel also prophesied against the United States and British-descended peoples of our time!
Here, in part, is what Ezekiel warns: "This is what the Sovereign Lord says: 'Disaster! An unheard-of disaster is coming … I am about to pour out my wrath on you and spend my anger against you … I will repay you in accordance with your conduct and the detestable practices among you. Then you will know that it is I the Lord who strikes the blow … those in the country will die by the sword, and those in the city will be devoured by famine and plague. All who survive and escape will be in the mountains, moaning like doves of the valleys, each because of his sins … They will … be clothed with terror … Their silver and gold will not be able to save them in the day of the Lord's wrath. They will not satisfy their hunger or fill their stomachs with it, for it has made them stumble into sin" (Ezekiel 7:5, 8-9, 15-20). Ezekiel's prophecies have an amazing track record of coming true, and most of the prophecies in the book of Ezekiel are directed toward the United States and British-descended peoples of today. We should all examine ourselves to see how our thoughts and conduct stack up against the standards found in God's Word.
