What is good about the fish dying, you say? Just this: it is another sign that the rule of Christ on the earth in the Kingdom of God is soon to begin! "Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near" (Luke 21:28).
The things we are to watch for include famines—food shortages in the major nations as well as those areas of the world where famines have always been more prevalent. We should be sobered by these end-time events, knowing that His return to remove the causes of famines and other evils is near. "So you also, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near" (Luke 21:31).
According to an article in U.S.A. Today, "A deadly Ebola-like virus is killing fish of all types in the Great Lakes, a development some scientists fear could trigger disaster for the USA's freshwater fish.
"Because of a lack of genetic resistance to the virus, fish populations could be damaged in the same way smallpox struck Native Americans and Dutch elm disease decimated elm trees,' says Jim Winton, chief of fish health at the U.S. Geological Survey in Seattle.
"Viral hemorrhagic septicemia (VHS) has been found in Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, Lake Huron, the St. Lawrence River, the Niagara River and an inland lake in New York. Scientists say the Great Lakes' $4.5 billion commercial and sport fishing industry could be vulnerable, especially if the virus spreads to Lake Michigan and Lake Superior.
"'What's so disturbing is that it's killing fish from so many species and with amazingly high mortality levels,' says Paul Bowser, professor of aquatic animal medicine at Cornell University.
"…Last year, it resulted in large fish kills that struck at least 20 species. Scientists are watching to see whether the disease returns in mid-May when water in the lakes warms to temperatures at which the virus attacks.
"'VHS is the most important and dangerous fish virus known worldwide,' Winton says. 'Its discovery in our freshwater is disturbing and potentially catastrophic'"(U.S.A. Today, April 30th, 2007)
Nothing now stands in the way of VHS virus spreading to freshwater lakes and streams throughout North America! "…pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man" (Luke 21:36).
If we, as a nation, heed the message of the Bible and turn to the true God, we could be spared. Since that is unlikely, individuals should personally come to repentance and call out to God for protection from the horrors which will accompany the close of this age!
Before God steps in to stop it, things will get much worse: "…For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect's sake those days will be shortened" (Mt 24:21-22).
Already, before this latest plague on our freshwater fish, the great saltwater fishing grounds of the North Atlantic and much of the world have been over-fished to the point of depletion. Since 1995 Canada has closed the Grand Banks, at one time the world's most productive fishing area, to most fishing. The Gulf of Mexico's famous red snapper and other species have also been greatly impacted. Now with the threat posed by this new freshwater scourge, even prolific farm-raised fish such as tilapia are threatened. The world is now entering a perilous time of massive food shortages, the likes of which has never before been seen.
