What will be the cost and consequence of the latest war in the Middle East? What does the Bible say about Iran, the U.S., and the possibility of a coming world conflict centered on Israel?
Will war against Iran bring lasting peace and renewed prosperity to its people? Will it improve the safety of the beleaguered nation of Israel? Will it show the world that the United States and its allies are noble pursuers of freedom, liberty, and justice for all people everywhere? Or will it come and go with little long-term consequence, just one more of the many failed attempts by powerful nations to shape the world to their liking?
One thing is certain: the bombing of Iran has shown the world that old alliances and power blocs are not what they used to be. World opinion is polarized along new lines that even ten years ago would have been unimaginable to most politicians and policymakers unfamiliar with God’s word.
The U.S. and the United Kingdom have long been close allies. Yet, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer earlier this week made it clear that his government does not support what he called “regime change from the skies.” Even so, Starmer defended U.S. use of UK airbases to support the bombing of Iranian missile launch sites. And what of longtime U.S. ally and NATO partner Germany? Its chancellor, Friedrich Merz, has warned in recent months that the U.S. claim to global leadership “has been challenged and possibly lost.” Yet Merz now concedes that “there are too many bad guys in the world” and has supported regime change in Iran.
But what would regime change look like? Though U.S. President Donald Trump had expressed hope that a more moderate leader might rise up to replace assassinated Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, more recently he has acknowledged that “most of the people we had in mind are dead” and that there is a risk that “somebody takes over who’s as bad as the previous person.”
At home, the war has highlighted sharp partisan divisions. Last Wednesday, the U.S. Senate voted 53–47 to oppose a motion limiting President Trump’s power to continue waging war against Iran. All but one Republican, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY), supported President Trump, while all but one Democrat, Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) sought to limit the President’s authority.
But even some who supported the President said, as did Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO), that they would not support deploying ground forces. Yet many observers have concluded that regime change is unlikely without “boots on the ground.” Already, the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency is reported to be arming Kurdish forces that have launched a fierce ground war against the Tehran government.
So, what’s next? Will war at the Strait of Hormuz bring inflation and shortages outside of Iran? Will other nations be drawn into a war that could deepen fears that we have already entered the early stages of World War III? It is far too early to jump to any rash conclusions, but some questions should be at the forefront of our thoughts. Those who oppose the bombing of Iran would do well to ask themselves whether they could countenance the atrocities the Iranian people experienced under Khamenei. Supporters of the war should ask themselves whether the long history of similarly failed attempts at nation-building suggest that this show of deadly force will ultimately improve the lives of the Iranian people.
Christian observers, however, understand that God is using the twists and turns of world events to set the stage for what the Apostle John described in the book of Revelation, a time when a beleaguered Israel will face a powerful European religio-political hegemon and a southern aggressor (Daniel 11:40–45) and a 200 million-man army from the east (Revelation 9:16) until the Prince of Peace, the King of kings, returns to establish His government on planet Earth.
Your Bible reveals end-time events that will see the present world order changed almost beyond recognition, as a powerful resurgent European empire comes to dominate world affairs and the U.S. becomes a subjugated nation.
