Last week, Jamaica’s Prime Minister proclaimed a state of emergency due to extreme violence related to the lottery in the northwest corner of the island nation. According to reports published in the Jamaica Gleaner on January 19 and January 21, there were over 330 murders in St. James Parish last year, and this year has been bloody so far, as well. Parish residents welcomed the state of emergency and military and police presence. One elderly resident observed, “This is the best thing...

Our local newspaper last week reprinted a Groundhog Day cartoon by Mike Luckovich from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. It depicted two gentlemen in old-fashioned garb staring forlornly at Punxsutawney Phil who has keeled over (having fainted or died). One gent says to the other, "He saw his 401K." In the past few weeks, thousands around the globe have been traumatized by powerful hurricanes in the Atlantic and typhoons in the Pacific that have caused tremendous devastation and suffering. Numerous islands in the Caribbean were pummeled by two Category 5 hurricanes in a row, and officials have described the after-storm conditions as “apocalyptic,” as thousands lost homes and were left without power, water or a means of communication with the outside world (CNN.com, September 24,...

In his 2012 Christmas speech, Pope Benedict XVI reiterated the long-standing Catholic view that heterosexual marriage is the only godly union. “When such commitment [heterosexual marriage] is repudiated, the key figures of human existence likewise vanish: father, mother, child—essential elements of the experience of being human are lost” (Reuters UK, December 21, 2012). He also described how homosexual marriage threatens the family “to its foundations” and called for a...

The majority of professing Christians consider Easter to be the most sacred holiday of the year, believing that it celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. But perhaps a simple, seldom-asked question is of vital importance: Is Easter biblical?
Consider a few quotes from well-known and reputable sources.
According to LearnReligions.com, “The word ‘Easter’ does not appear in the Bible and no early church celebrations of Christ’s resurrection are mentioned in Scripture....
