How Do You Fix a Broken World?

“If it ain't broke, don’t fix it,” goes the old saying. It seems that some people have got to change things for the sake of change. The way they think is that if something is old, it must be wrong—and it’s their job to come up with something new. Somehow they believe that if something is new, it must be better, which of course is not always the case. Progress is not always as simple as that.

But what if something really is broken? What’s to be done?

Of course, there are any number of repair specialists, and restoration is big business. One has only to see the number of TV shows based on the restoration business of cars, houses, and even old toys to realise just how much nostalgia and a hankering for the “good ol’ days” motivates some people.

Many of the cars and products manufactured in the ’50s and ’60s were made to last and because they don’t have hundreds of electronic gadgets and computers in them to go wrong, they are relatively simple to restore. On the other hand, with decreasing prices on products made in China and other countries, it is only those with a lot of money who can afford the luxury of restoration.

But let’s look at the ultimate “fix it” program. Do you know what it is? The New Testament Bible refers to it, in the Book of Acts 3:19–21:

“Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that He may send Jesus Christ, who was preached to you before, whom heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things.”

God has promised a time when the whole world, when all of creation, will be restored to its pure and perfect state. Just as the world was at the end of the sixth day of creation, so it will be once again. The ecological balance will harmoniously function so that the different cycles that maintain the earth’s equilibrium will once again operate.

The fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and the land animals will no longer be burdened by pollution. Humans will live with them in perfect balance, striving to ensure that their own food sources are the best that they can possibly be.

At Tomorrow’s World we strive to spread the word that a new world is coming. We know that Jesus Christ is going to return to Earth for the express purpose of securing this hope by the power that only He possesses. No one else is able to do it. Countless agencies like the United Nations have tinkered at the edges. Just as they “fix” one thing, another problem arises somewhere else.

What can you do to help? The answer to that question is found in verse 19. Let’s read it again: “Repent therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that the times of refreshing may come.” Amazingly, you can make a difference. By “fixing” what’s broken in you, God is building a team that will be ready to work with Jesus Christ in a very practical way to change the world. It will involve a root and branch change in the way everything is done.

Greed and corruption will be replaced with a giving, honest approach to business and government. Bribery, graft, and avarice will no longer motivate deals and transactions. Children and young women will be safe on the streets, bullies will be rapped over the knuckles, and the proud and angry look will be changed to a kind and loving smile.

The whole creation will rejoice in the Lord. Hear Isaiah’s words:

“The nursing child shall play by the cobra’s hole, and the weaned child shall put his hand in the viper’s den. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain, for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea” (Isaiah 11:8).

Yes, the world’s "broke," and God’s going to fix it!
