For several decades, Azerbaijan and Armenia have fought over a disputed region in the Caucasus Mountains. Although numerous attempts at peace have been made, none have succeeded (EuroNews, August 8, 2025). Now, through a deal brokered by the United States, both parties are excited about a future peace between their two nations.
Earlier this week, the leaders of these two nations met in Washington, D.C., and worked out a peace settlement that some are calling “unimaginable.” As Azerbaijan’s president Aliyev noted, “We are today establishing peace in the South Caucasus…. Today we [are] writing a great new history.” His Armenian counterpart added that the agreement between the nations was “opening a chapter of peace.” At the joint press conference with both leaders, President Trump boldly stated that “The countries of Armenia and Azerbaijan are committing to ending all fighting forever.” Of course, the peace agreement will also provide the U.S. with economic access to the region.
After just a few months back in the White House, President Trump has accomplished in the Caucasus what neither Russia nor Europe has been able to do over many decades. However, will this human-brokered peace, made between fallible and self-focused human beings, truly last? The Bible reveals that while human leaders love to talk of peace, they do not know the way to peace (Isaiah 59:8; Jeremiah 6:14). True and lasting peace will only come to this world with the return of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6–7), who will show the way (Psalm 119:165).
