A Nation Clothed in Pride

Comment on this article

Now that June has ended, the so-called “Pride Month,” which celebrates LGBTQI+ behaviors and lifestyles, has concluded in the United States. During “Pride Month,” many facets of our country celebrate pride, as seen in professional sports, government, and military branches, a variety of “pride flags” flown, clothing worn, and more. This year, the White House even hung a large “Progress Pride flag” front and center at a “Pride” celebration on June 10.

This year’s “Pride Month” was ushered in by an official statement by President Biden on May 31, which is available to read at WhiteHouse.gov. The statement is entitled “A Proclamation on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Intersex Pride Month, 2023,” and the second-to-last paragraph states,

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2023 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Intersex Pride Month. I call upon the people of the United States to recognize the achievements of the LGBTQI+ community, to celebrate the great diversity of the American people, and to wave their flags of pride high.

Though not to the same degree, former President Trump also offered support of “Pride Month” during his tenure, as shown by a statement he made via Twitter on May 31, 2019:

As we celebrate LGBT Pride Month and recognize the outstanding contributions LGBT people have made to our great Nation, let us also stand in solidarity with the many LGBT people who live in dozens of countries worldwide that punish, imprison, or even execute individuals on the basis of their sexual orientation. My Administration has launched a global campaign to decriminalize homosexuality and invite all nations to join us in this effort!

We here at Tomorrow’s World do not engage in political activity and we reject violence. However, this tiny sample shows the United States’ love and celebration of individual pride, and this does not bode well for America’s future—as the Almighty makes crystal clear in His word.

Notice the theme of pride in one of the Bible’s most currently relevant prophecies, penned by the Apostle Paul in 2 Timothy 3:1–5:

But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters [those who express significant pride], proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty [blatantly proud], lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!

The Bible has much to say about pride, often in the sense of arrogance and a lofty view of the self. Not only are many in America proud; they’re even proud of abominable behaviors and lifestyles.

The Bible gives many warnings about what always follows on the heels of pride: terrible consequences such as shame, strife, destruction, and punishment from God, by which He ultimately brings people down (Proverbs 11:2; 13:10; 16:18; James 4:6; Daniel 4:37). These simple truths regarding pride are exemplified by the fates of ancient nations as described in many Old Testament scriptures—nations that went down the path upon which the United States is sprinting (Isaiah 16:6–7; Jeremiah 13:8–27; Obadiah 1:1–4).

The United States, very regrettably, is a nation figuratively and even literally clothing itself in pride—the very trademark, flag, and clothing chosen by the devil (Isaiah 14:12–15; Ezekiel 28:17; Job 41:34; 1 Timothy 3:6).

God abhors every form of pride, even so much as a “proud look,” and much more the waving of “pride flags” high and celebrating pride with parades (Proverbs 6:16–17). He desires that individuals and nations go the opposite of the way much of America’s population is heading, often stating that He desires a humble heart and attitude (2 Chronicles 7:14; Micah 6:8).

May America tear off its boastful, arrogant, haughty, and prideful clothing, and follow the beautiful, inspired words of God’s servant Peter: “Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for ‘God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble’” (1 Peter 5:5).
